Examining the Nexus between Riba and Gharar, and Islamic Banking Products Among Zanzibar People

Abstract:
This paper aims at examining the nexus between riba, gharar and income level, and Islamic Banking Products among Zanzibar people. The Islamic bank products such as Murabahah, Musharakah, Mudarabah, Ijarah, Hawalah, Takaful and Sukuk were considered as independent variables for this study. On the other hand, the dependent variables investigated were three (3) namely riba, gharar and income level. A total of 116 respondents consisting of Zanzibar people residing in different districts responded to the survey questionnaire via google form. The study used statistical techniques to analyse the collected data in terms of demographic, descriptive, reliability and validity analysis and presented by charts, tables and curves. The hypothesis test has been conducted using correlation analysis. Statistically, the finding revealed that, the people of Zanzibar were against Riba but in favour of Murabahah, Musharakah, Mudarabah, Ijarah, Hawalah, Takaful and Sukuk with p≤0.01. The result also revealed that the people of Zanzibar were against gharar with p≤0.01. On the other hand, income level showed a significant correlation against Mudarabah, Ijarah, Hawalal, Takaful and Sukuk as p≤0.01. These findings suggest that the products and services of Islamic banks have a significant relationship with Riba, Gharar and level of income for Islamic banks’ shariah priority. It is also shown that riba and gharar were significantly impacted the people of Zanzibar for the influence on the acquisition of Islamic bank facilities which are vital on direct effects that attract customers and investors in which they are customised from conventional banks products. As the awareness level from these Islamic products are high, it is recommended that Islamic banks should focus in designing Islamic banks products (Murabahah, Musharakah, Mudarabah, Ijarah, Hawalah, Takaful and Sukuk) that will comply with Shariah requirement.

Strategic Competitiveness and Corporate Performance of Paints Manufacturing Companies Quoted in Nigerian Stock Exchange

Abstract:
Corporate organizations all over the world are continually faced with volatile business conditions, competitive market environments and rapid technological change. Most organizations focus on survive and also find better ways to improve their performance. This study examined the effects of strategic competitiveness on the performance of quoted paints manufacturing companies in Nigerian stock exchange. The research used the descriptive research design method. The study investigated the relationship between cost-leadership strategy, differentiation strategy, focus strategy and performance of companies. This research applied the theory of dynamic capability. The data was collected from one hundred and eighty-seven (187) respondents, these includes directors, management staff and senior staff of the six paint companies quoted in Nigeria. The results showed that a strategic competitiveness (cost leadership strategy, diversification strategy and focus strategy) have a significant impact on corporate performance. These findings reinforce the need for paint manufacturing companies to adopt strategic planning in capitalizing on differentiation strategy, train their staff to gain competitive advantage knowledge and ensure their competitive survival.

The Impact of Fraud on Financial Performance of Deposit Money Banks: Evidence from Nigeria

Abstract:
This study demonstrated new evidence sustaining the idea that the issue of fraud has a long history and that fraud in deposit money banks affect performance when fraud are proxied with data extracted from inappropriate auditing process, peer group pressure, computer fraud and management looting using the Generalized Least Square Method (GLS) and the z-statistics as method of data analysis. The data used in the study were adjusted with the Jarque-Bera test of normality to remove any form of spurious result as variable normality is a standardized requirement for any linear model while the cronbach apha value was used to test the validity, consistency and reliability of the data. The main aim of the study is to investigate if variables like computer fraud, managers looting; inappropriate auditing, peer group pressure affect bank performance. To achieve this objective, research questions and hypotheses were formulated and variables were proxied for fraud and deposit banks performance as distilled from related literatures. The GLS result was used to test the formulated hypotheses with a standard z-value of 1.96. The GLS regression results revealed that there are negative relationships between bank frauds and performance while the z-test shows that bank frauds affect deposit money bank performance in Nigeria. The study therefore recommends that an efficient and modern financial technological structure such as Computer Aided Auditing Tools & Techniques (CAATTs) would combat fraud in deposit money banks in Nigeria.

Abstract:
The underlining presupposition and the supposition of performance management as a study field have been controversial or have a non-defined concept ever since the field was introduced to the mainstream economy. The paper covers the concept of performance management as a business analyst, scrum master, archeologist, and leader. The research delves into the founding history of performance management and analyzes critical performance management tools. Our findings show that performance management should be seen, managed, and played as an infinite game while creating incentives for the players who will, in turn, drive productivity in any industry.
